Brazil Introduces Strict Crypto Fraud Penalties with Up to 10-Year Prison Terms
Brazil's Chamber of Deputies is tightening regulations on electronic fraud, explicitly targeting cryptocurrency-related crimes. The Finance and Taxation Committee has approved Bill 5819/2025, which empowers authorities to freeze suspect crypto wallets and imposes prison sentences of 6-10 years for severe cases of digital fraud.
The legislation significantly raises penalties from the current 4-8 year range, while introducing monetary fines and expanded judicial powers. Courts can now freeze both traditional bank accounts and crypto wallets, restrict real estate transactions, and limit suspects' digital activities during investigations.
This move represents Brazil's escalating crackdown on financial crimes in the digital asset space, particularly those involving social media, email, and other electronic channels. The bill faces additional legislative hurdles before becoming law.
